The negotiations continued Monday, April 15 after running through the weekend.
UFCW Locals 328, 371, 919, 1445 and 1459 walked off their jobs at over 240 Stop & Shop stores in New England April 11, said Supermarket News.
When the strike began on Thursday, April 11, many stores were forced to close and customers were instructed to leave.
But by Friday, April 12, the stores had reopened with shortened hours and the pharmacies and banks inside the Stop & Shop stores were open, even if a store was closed, said Supermarket News.
“This is a challenging time, but I want you to know that I and the entire Stop & Shop team remain firmly committed to getting a fair new contract in place for all of our associates in New England,” Stop & Shop President Mark McGowan said in a statement, according to Supermarket News.
“Our team is standing by and remains ready to continue negotiations anytime. We hope that the UFCW local unions return to the table to reach a fair and responsible contract now," continued the statement, said the report.
UFCW Locals 328, 919, 1459, 1445, and 371, representing all 31,000 Stop & Shop workers in New England, have been in negotiations with the company over a new contract for nearly three months since Jan. 14, the union posted on its website.
At issue said the workers' union April 14 post is the company is proposing unreasonable cuts to workers’ take-home pay, health care, and retirement benefits.
